Meat Cute - The Other Palace Theatre

What It Is About

Meat Cute is a story about the strength of platonic female friendships – and dives into the pressures of needing to ‘have it all together’ in your 30s whilst balancing your own sense of self – without losing your mind.

The Power Of Friendship

Written by and starring Laura Kirman and Meg Travers, and directed by Nancy Zamit, this show is a chaotic and hilarious yet heartwarming and heart felt romcom. Meat Cute is a love letter to friendship, and how it makes you feel seen even when everything around you is falling apart.

We see snapshots of the friendship between two women called Harry and Sally (no pun intended), from when they keep meeting in the most random places to when they have a blossoming, true friendship. Throw in a bit of audience interaction, and it is a recipe for a very fun and fulfilling night!

Deeply relatable and a rollercoaster of emotions, this two-hander is a celebration of motherhood, feminism, and those friendships that mean so much and are so precious.

The Performances

Kirman and Travers deliver a comedy masterclass – easily slipping into different accents and playing multiple characters effortlessly. Also, their dialogue is hilarious and witty – which makes it even more impactful when the emotion shifts.

Bringing The Story To Life

Natalia Alvarez’s entirely pink set design is simple yet very effective, and really helps to make the power of female friendships come into the foreground. Alex Braithwaite’s sound design too is extremely effective – the use of recordings of women speaking is a very lovely touch. The lighting design by Nicola Crawford makes clever use of the space in the Other Palace Studio too.

Final Thoughts

Meat Cute is a joyful, moving and sharply observed celebration of female friendship that will resonate with anyone who has ever relied on their friends to help navigate life’s chaos.

It is packed with laugh-out-loud moments and heartfelt emotion, and beneath its witty dialogue and playful energy lies a thoughtful exploration of identity, motherhood and the pressure of adulthood.

A charming and uplifting production, Meat Cute is a reminder that sometimes the greatest love stories are the friendships that stay with us through every stage of life.
