Brendan Scannell’s The Abyss carefully treads the line between stand-up and theatre, creating a show that is both hilarious and emotionally raw. After a sold-out 2026 Hollywood Fringe run and nominations for Top of the Fringe and the Solo Theatre Award, Scannell makes his Edinburgh debut with a deeply personal dive into the depths of his own mind.

Set inside a sinking submersible, Scannell takes us on a surreal journey through his thoughts, questioning himself, his family and the experiences that have shaped him. His Irish mother is a life coach obsessed with death, his brother is spiritually communing with Gwyneth Paltrow, and his inner child.

The absurdity provides plenty of laughs, but underneath it is something far more vulnerable. Scannell lays his insecurities, family dynamics and emotional struggles bare, creating a kind of comedic trauma bonding between performer and audience. We laugh at his experiences, recognise uncomfortable parts of ourselves in them, and somehow feel a little less alone for it.

Scannell is an incredibly engaging performer, switching effortlessly between characters, storytelling and stand-up. His comic timing is excellent, but it is his emotional honesty that gives the show its real depth. The deeper the submersible sinks, the more exposed he becomes.

Funny but surprisingly poignant, The Abyss is comedy with genuine emotional weight – a chaotic descent into one man’s psyche that somehow leaves you feeling a little more connected to your own.

The Abyss is on at 21:20 in Patter House until 30th August
