Not every musical can be Hamilton. Some end up critically panned, financially catastrophic or simply forgotten — and FLOP! is here to give them the standing ovation they never received.

Arthur Hull returns to the Edinburgh Fringe with an updated musical cabaret celebrating Theatreland’s casualties. Part love letter to Broadway and the West End, part theatrical support group for shows that probably needed one, it digs up misunderstood misfires and forgotten gems and gives them another chance in the spotlight.

Hull’s talent and vocals are genuinely incredible – but it is his adaptability that really stands out. He effortlessly switches between different styles, characters and musical worlds, showcasing an impressive range throughout. Songs from King Kong the MusicalCarrieSpider-Man: Turn Off the DarkLove Never Dies and many more make for a wonderfully eclectic set.

What makes FLOP! so enjoyable is Hull’s genuine affection for these theatrical underdogs. This could easily have been a catalogue of disasters, but instead becomes a celebration of the ambitious, strange and occasionally ill-fated shows that make musical theatre so much fun.

Beneath the comedy is a genuine love letter to theatre and a reminder that commercial failure doesn’t necessarily mean a show has nothing worthwhile to offer.

With powerhouse vocals, brilliant versatility and infectious enthusiasm, FLOP! proves that even the biggest theatrical disasters deserve their moment in the spotlight.

FLOP! is on at 18:45 in Teviot until 30th August
